Vastu Shastra is a time tested science of construction being practiced in India which lays down principles for construction and layout of buildings to attract health, wealth and prosperity.

It originated from the Vedas and tends to align houses with the forces of nature in order to promote positivity in the place where people live.

Vastu Shastra sometimes referred to as Vastu Vidya is the knowledge and science of Indian architectural design.

It is an ancient Indian Science that helps to maintain harmony between a man and his surrounding living environment because it focuses on the proper relationship between man and the space.  

The five elements of vastu are earth, water, air, fire and ethereal space or sky. 

Namely, the origin of Vastu Shastra is devoted to the five elements – Panchabhutas, that include Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space.

  • West: Appears as home to Varuna, the god of rain. Best to be used in dining rooms and children’s sleeping areas. 
  • Northeast: The direction considered to be beneficial, which is the symbolism of water and the element of heaven. Perfect for worship rooms and meditation rooms. 
  • Northwest: Linked to air; suitable for guest rooms and storage. 
  • Southeast: Charged by Agni, it is suitable for residential areas, kitchens, electrical items, etc. 
  • Southwest: Associated with the earth element, should be used in areas such as master bedrooms and large pieces of furniture

It is generally advisable to place the living room in the northeastern, northern or eastern part of the house.

A pooja (worship) room should always be established in the northeastern direction of the house as it is considered the most favorable.

The study room should be located in the NE, East, or West direction. This is good for concentration and enhouses knowledge. Study table should always be placed in the east or north direction. 

Common Vastu Remedies 

Even if your home’s existing layout does not comply with Vastu principles, you can still incorporate simple remedies to mitigate negative effects:

  • Mirrors: One should hang mirrors at the northeast or the north wall to ensure that good energies are reflected in the house. 
  • Plants: Some of the indoor plants considered to improve on positivity and health include tulsi and bamboo plants
  • Colors: Whenever possible, paint walls light colours such as white and cream or even light pastel shades would be appropriate in the northeast. Do not use dark colours because they draw in negative energy. 
  • Wind Chimes: Metal featured wind chimes can help to draw good energy and bring down tension and stress from one’s life. 
  • Lighting: Also light the northeast corner and the doors as this is believed to help in attracting wealth into the house. 


Vastu Shastra affects and treats the environment around us and provides rules that are equally functional and meaningful even after centuries.

In general,adherence to the physical energies practices can lead to improvement of your health, as well as spiritual and mental status given that your home is in harmony with nature.

Same way the basic principles of Vastu can be incorporated at the time of construction of a new house or when small modifications are being made to the existing house in order to bring positive energy in our life.

Do not rush in implementing Vastu principles to your abode for it is all about harmony and moderation in hitting the nail on the head.
